It's all in the numbers

Try this on for size. These are all scores from this season:

Florida 59, Troy 31
Troy 41, Oklahoma State 23
Oklahoma State 42, Florida Atlantic 6
Florida Atlantic 42, Minnesota 39

So, Florida is 28 points better than Troy, which is 18 points better than Oklahoma State, which is 36 points better than Florida Atlantic, which beat the Gophers by 3. I know these scores aren't always a perfect comparison, but this at least helps illustrate the gap between the Gophers and the elite teams around the country.

By the way, Miami of Ohio lost 47-10 at home vs. Cincinnati today. I guess losing to the Gophers last week really demoralized them.

I'm listening to ole sidney on the evil neighbor and once again all the gopher (or could we say minnesota sport's fans as a whole?) apologists are saying, "let's be patient with our Gopher football team". For a division one football team to be so inept for so long is simply inexcusable. For those fans that stick by this team, they are a either a lot more loyal or a lot more stupid than I can fathom!

"so inept for so long?"

haven't the gophers been to a couple of bowl games in recent years?

maroney and barber?

a win in columbus five or six years ago, right?

are things really that bad?

and PD, no trivializing Miami's blowout loss to Cincinnati! How 'bout those 3-0 Bearcats!

Take heart, dear Vegas Gopher. There is no worse thing to be right now than a Twin Cities Leprechaun.

Gopher football coaching records since 1970:

7-13-1 Murray Warmath
39-39 Cal Stoll
19-35 Joe Salem
11-12 Lou Holtz
28-37 John Gutekunst
16-39 Jim Wacker
64-57 Glen Mason

Clearly mediocre at best. Record vs Michigan in that period: 3 wins and 32 losses; record vs Ohio State during that period: 2 wins and 31 losses. So, they get a lucky win a few years back. Can't we expect them to be at least somewhat competitive on an ongoing basis? Some of the scores vs Ohio State include 44 - 0 in 2006, 34 - 3 in 2002, 31 - 3 in 1997, 45 - 0 in 1996. The list goes on and on. Yet, we glorify one lone victory a few years back?

The record vs Wisconsin is 15 - 22 since 1970. A little better, but still pretty inept if I do say so myself. I would think Minnesota would be able to get the same quality of athletes as Madison, Wisconsin. At least you see Wisconsin fighting for National Championships and they can be found in the top ten (in polls) with some regularity.

I would hope a Big Ten school would get a few players in the NFL. Hell, the law of averages would say that some players would make it to the professional level.

And, do we really want to discuss Bowl games and this team? Please see the 2006 fiasco vs Texas Tech in the Insight Bowl (boy, I hope the Gophs get another invite to that prestigious bowl!). I can't remember exactly how that game went, but it seems to me they were up by around 30 (and I think that was going into the fourth quarter!) and ended up losing. Now, that is Inept!!!!!

Sorry about that diatribe, but come on folks. Plain and simple, this program sucks.
