1 down, 365 to go

Happy New Year, everybody! Today's post is the first of 366 this year, if all goes according to plan and I can stick with this. I want to push myself to write more regularly this year, so a post a day seems to be the way to start.

And it's a better way to start than Hawaii, Florida or Arkansas picked. Which reminds me ... with a 4-1 record, the humble Mountain West Conference has posted the best record of the bowl season! That's 4-1, with the one loss coming when underdog Air Force couldn't hang onto a huge lead vs. Cal. Maybe UNLV has a crappy football program, but at least the Rebels can say their conference is better than the SEC, thanks to Utah, BYU, TCU and New Mexico.

I'd be remiss if I didn't point out that I predicted the Vikings final record accurately. What are you thoughts on Chilly and TJack?

Your optimism was well-founded, although at 3-6 you had to be wondering, no?

I think Chilly and TJack deserve another year. Both took some big steps forward this year. Both have more steps to take before they could be considered regular threats to make the playoffs, but they deserve the chance to take those steps in 2008.

I don't want to put a number on it, but if they don't win 10 games OR show significant promise next year, then it'll be time to blow it up and start over. Which will be a shame, given that they will have wasted some great defensive efforts, but that's life in the NFL.

One good veteran receiver is all they need... not a decent rookie surrounded by "position" receivers and also-rans.

Peterson's horrible end to the season doesn't seem to be generating enough concern. Maybe that knee was worse than we thought. He was completely ineffective.

I think defenses geared up to stop Peterson, daring Jackson to beat them, and he couldn't get it done regularly enough to keep them honest. At least that's what I'm hoping. At least he'll have some motivation in the offseason, if he needs it.

A top-flight receiver would be most excellent. We were spoiled here for years with Carter and Moss. Even a Jake Reed-caliber receiver (in his prime) would help. Sidney Rice will be good, Bobby Wade is a nice No. 3 receiver, and Allison is a return man who can be a No. 4 or 5 receiver in the NFL. They still need a No. 1 guy for a couple years until Rice is ready to fill that role.

Still, the future is not as bleak as I thought it was earlier this year.
